9 Easy Tips To Lower Your Baby’s Temperature

9 easy tips to lower your baby's temperature

Mommies, don’t hesitate to bring your baby’s temperature down if he has a fever. Fever is a natural response of the body to illness. A defense mechanism to prevent the spread of pathogens. However, a high fever can be very dangerous, especially for small children.

Before we go any further, we want to warn you that a fever can be very harmless or very serious, depending on the origin. Take him to the pediatrician  when your baby’s temperature rises above 38 degrees, or even before.  A medical specialist will indicate which medicines are required.

The pediatrician will diagnose the cause of the fever. Your child’s doctor will prescribe the medication your child needs. It is important to note the time of intake and the amount of drugs prescribed. Likewise, it is important to note other clues.

Never disregard the pediatrician’s opinion or the prescription drug. You should never treat your child with home remedies because ‘this used to be done’ or ‘my mother used to do it that way’.

The tips we propose here, as well as any other tips you will find on the internet, only serve as a supplement to the medication. But to clarify, they are not a substitute for a treatment prescribed by a doctor.

That said, we’d like to cover the most helpful tips for lowering your baby’s temperature (while also following your doctor’s advice).

Tips to bring down your baby’s temperature

How to lower your baby's temperature when you have a fever

Tip #1 – Don’t use too many blankets

Don’t make the fever worse. If you notice that your child’s temperature is rising, do not cover him with several blankets. This is not a good idea.  Also, do not dress your baby too warmly.

Tip #2 – Take a bath

Bathe your baby in lukewarm water and moisten his forehead. Let your baby play in the tub for a while to cool off. You’ll notice soon enough that this will bring the fever down. But don’t let the bath last too long!

Tip #3 – Cold compresses

Use cold, wet compresses. The water should not be too cold. Place the compress on your child’s forehead and the back of his neck for a few seconds. Then replace it with a new cool compress. Keep doing this continuously.

Tip #4 – Drink, drink, drink

Increase your child’s fluid intake, especially with water, breast milk or natural fruit juice. The best fruit juices are cantaloupe, orange, tangerine and pineapple.

Tip #5 – Use aloe vera

Cut off a leaf of the aloe vera and peel it to reveal the clear gel inside. Place the leaf on your little one’s forehead and leave it there for a while.

After a few minutes, remove the leaf and scrape off the gel dried by the fever. When revealing another fresh layer of gel, place the leaf on your child’s forehead again to cool him down. Make sure to remove the sharp edges of the tray before placing the tray on your child.

Tip #6 – Sweat it out

Give your child some exercise. No, we’re not talking about going to the gym or doing sit-ups or anything. Even if your child has a fever, if he feels like it, play with the ball together. Or you can also put on some music and dance and jump together to the tunes of your child’s favorite song. This will definitely help bring your baby’s temperature down.

You will be surprised how exercise helps your baby sweat out his fever.

Tip #7 – Apple Cider Vinegar

Mix 5 parts water with one part apple cider vinegar. Apply the solution to your child’s forehead and back of the neck with a washcloth. Repeat with a fresh solution when the compresses get warm.

Tip #8 – Potatoes and onions

Cut an onion into strips and put them in your child’s socks under the soles of his feet. After half an hour, replace the onions with fresh onions. If your child is also coughing, you can place half an onion next to his bed during the night to relieve the cough. You have to throw the onion away in the morning.

If the smell of onions is too strong for your child, you can use the same sock method with potatoes. Those work too.

Tip #9 – Tea Time!

Give your child a decoction of thyme and chamomile. Boil water and then add these medicinal herbs to the boiling water. You can use bruised leaves or stems.

Let the herbs cook for a few seconds. Then remove the water from the heat and let it cool. Strain the tea. Before giving the drink to your child (half a cup), add a spoonful of honey and 10 drops of lemon juice.

If your child is under 2 years old, check with your pediatrician before giving this drink to your little one. You should make sure your child is ready to take these ingredients before administering them.

Tip #10 – Skin to Skin

Bring your baby’s skin into contact with your own skin by placing your baby naked on your bare skin. Amazingly, this skin-to-skin contact will help bring your baby’s temperature down. You can also do this while carrying your baby in the baby carrier. Your baby will be only too happy with the extra hugs.
