Before going into detail about the importance of creativity, let’s define the concept itself. According to psychologist Joy Paul Guilford , being creative implies the presence of three skills, namely:

  • Flexibility: The ability to find, for example, a wide range of solutions to a single problem.
  • Flexibility: the ability to look at situations from different angles and propose original solutions.
  • Originality: different and unusual thinking.

Howard Garnder, the creator of the multiple intelligences theory, even hypothesizes that each of the 8 intelligences expresses creativity at its core. It is therefore essential for proper cognitive development in children.

So it is important to allow and encourage children to express their imagination by, for example:

  • Music
  • Painting and drawing
  • Play
  • Dance
  • Write
  • To craft
  • Drama

Alike: a short film about the importance of creativity

Alike shows us a sad reality by visually describing a bleak and dull society. A society in which citizens simply carry out an ordinary and repetitive daily routine.

The young protagonist in the story tries to go along with this colorless and monotonous life, but his way of understanding the world just doesn’t fit.

As a result , his creativity is punished until he finally loses his hopes and dreams. He accepts the current standards and becomes another sheep in the flock. Fortunately, this boy’s father realizes that something is wrong: his child is no longer as lively and cheerful as he used to be.

That is why the father proposes a solution to this serious problem. In doing so , he enables his son to be creative in order to enjoy a life full of colour. He then teaches his son that this is the way to a happy life.

Thanks to this film, we as parents and educators can appreciate the importance of creativity in our children. It is our duty to encourage this creativity and ensure that it never dies.

Teachers, in particular, should strive to ensure that going to school is more than just developing academic skills. Rather, it should also involve developing creative, social and emotional skills, etc.

At the same time, we also need to give our children the freedom at home to express their thoughts and ideas through art and imagination. We must therefore prevent our little ones from losing their essence and unique personal identity.

We must understand that every individual is different and that this is necessary and enriching when it comes to building a healthy and balanced society. After all, a world without creativity is dull and useless.
